If you (or others) are involved in an incident/ emergency, there are a number of important points to consider:

    1) Stay calm.

    2) Identify the nature of the incident/ emergency.

    3) Considering the safety and wellbeing of everyone concerned.

    4) Give appropriate first aid as required.

    5) Evaluate whether you and those involved can or cannot cope with the incident/ emergency independently.

    6) Summon outside help as appropriate.

    7) Should you request outside help, there are a number of things that should be communicated:

    a) The nature of the incident/ emergency and what actions have been taken (stressing that it is a mountain or wilderness incident/ emergency).

    b) the number of people involved (and the total number of people in a group). Where the incident/ emergency occurred, including: a physical description and map, or other coordinates (learn to use them). Which route or trail you are on, or close to; closest access points etc.

    c) The level of the leaders'/ groups experience (including first aid) and what clothing, equipment, sustenance and water etc. to hand.

    8) If outside help is requested, it is vital to listen carefully to questions asked, have answers ready (as best you can), pay attention to any instructions given and keep mobile phones 'lines' open so that you can be easily contacted.
