Established in 1954 to mark Montagu’s centenary, the Nature Garden began as a project by the Montagu Horticultural Society. It was declared a Nature Reserve in 1961 under the care of the Montagu Municipality. Since 1994, the Montagu Nature Garden Association, a volunteer-led non-profit organization, has proudly managed this beautiful space.
The Garden’s mission is to conserve and showcase indigenous wildflowers, featuring plant species native to the Klein Karoo and surrounding areas. It serves as a space for environmental education, recreation, and peaceful reflection.
Spanning 12 hectares, the garden offers a stunning mix of arid hillsides, plains, and stream-fed habitats. Visitors can explore over 8 kilometres of gravel pathways or embark on the 1.7-kilometre trail to Bessiekop’s summit for panoramic views. The flora includes vibrant succulents, daisies, and aloes, especially striking in winter and spring. Wildlife sightings include tortoises, porcupines, and a variety of bird species.
Open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, the garden welcomes donations at its kiosk. From April to October, visitors can enjoy Tuesday morning teas or book the venue for events like weddings and concerts, including the popular “Summer Sunset” series.
